LARGE BROWN TRANSFERWARE STAFFORDSHIRE PLATTER
MELBOURNE PATTERN
GILDEA AND WALKER POTTERIES
Tunstall, Staffordshire England
c. 1880
This early large outstanding 16 1/4 " long x 12 3/4 " wide platter is transfer printed in brown. A fabulous transfer. large enough to hold the biggest bird.
Capturing the Victorian love of nature during the aesthetic movement, this platter is transfer printed with a geometric designs, the sun coming over the horizon, a flock of songbirds, sailboats, flowers and bamboo, an Owl perched upon a branch as the crescent moon and stars appear behind him. Our favorite pattern in aesthetic transferware, it has everything.
The condition of this delightful platter is great. A pottery masterpiece !
