Early Creamware Childs Miniature Motto Prayer Mug
GRACE AFTER MEAT
Staffordshire England c 1820

This very small desirable mug from the Staffordshire region of England stands a mere 2-1/12 inches tall x 2-1/2 incHes wide excluding the applied loop handle.

The wonderful creamy earthenware mug has a deep enamel iron red band along the rim. The hand engraved central reserve is transfer printed or bat printed in iron red bearing a mealtime prayer:

GRACE AFTER MEAT – For what we have been receiving, may the Lord make us truly thankfull. AMEN.

Early creamware and earthenware mugs like this were made as gifts for children and rewards of merit, this one possibly given as a lesson in grace and piety for a good child. These tiny cups are quite scarce especially with such a universal subject as this.

The cup has a professional restoration of a V shaped piece in the body, invisible except on close examination. No other chips cracks or repairs. Only minor typical firing imperfections and mior wear to the reserve consistent with age and prior use. A nice example of early creamware, offered as is for a price that reflects condition and rarity of the piece.
