This charming early plate dates to 1825-1835. The plate measures 9 ” across, with a lovely scolloped rim. This plate is transfer printed in brown underglaze and finished with pearlware glaze.
It is decorated in the Mogul Scenery pattern made by Thomas Mayer in the Staffordshire region of England. The pattern features a series of images with elephants and handlers in India.
According to the Transferware Collectors Club database, the name Mogul is an Arabic or Persian form of Mongul, usually applied to the Mohammeden empire in India founded in 1526. The TCC states that the image possibly originates from an engraving or source print by Elliot in 1833 titled Benares, a city in India, also known as Varanasi. This is an extremely strong example of a fine pattern featuring wild animals.
