Early Childs Pearlware Reward of Merit Plate
FOR A GOOD GIRL ~ MILKING COW
Staffordshire England ~ c1820
This fine early soft paste childs plate measures 7-1/4 inches in diameter, transfer printed in black with soft pastel matte polychrome enamel hand decorating. The Plate, For a Good Girl, has a sweet scene of a milkmaids cow outside of the barns in rural England. The plate has a scalloped rim with press moulded flowers and foliage in enamel colors of orange, yellow, and pink. The outer rim is painted in iron red.
Condition is very good, with wear to the rims and stilt marks front and back and a couple dots of flaking on the painted green grass below the cow’s head. Minor patina, more distinct on the back side. Light weight, well moulded and finely potted. The plate has an old label from DM&P Manheim auction house in New York City. Plates like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit. Sold as is, as shown, and as described. A superb example.
