AESTHETIC BLACK TRANSFERWARE PLATTER
TENNYSON PATTERN
New Wharf Potteries
Burslem, Staffordshire England
c. 1884
This wonderful Victorian aesthetic 18 " long x 14 1/4 " wide platter is transfer printed in crisp dark black. Large enough to handle any turkey.
The pattern features very busy scenes of flowers, raspberry canes and raspberry fruit mixed with wild grains. Sailing ships, a pond of Water lilies, bees flying past ripe berries and two fabulous cartouches, one of a countryside thatched home and the other of a garden bird peacefully perched upon a branch. Geometric Japanesque ribbons float in the wonderful scene. The pattern displays the victorian eras love of nature and travel to exotic lands.
Condition is great. Looks to have been stored away for the past 135 years.
