BROWN TRANSFERWARE PLATE

THE WORLD PATTERN ~ RHINE RIVER + DRESDEN

Wallis Gimson and Co. Potteries

Staffordshire England  ~  1884

This large Victorian 8 sided 10 1/2 " plate is transfer printed in dark brown.  The plate is further enhanced by fabulous underglaze painting in shades of red, golden yellow, green and cobalt blue.

The pattern features an exotic geometric border with ferns, cherry blossoms, wild orchids and a butterfly surrounding two fabulous cartouches .  One is of the Rhine Bridge & Palace and the other is of the Staircase of the Bruhl Terrace in Dresden.

The Rhine River is one of the most important rivers in Europe running through Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France and the Netherlands.

Balcony of Europe ~ Terrace of Dresden  ~~

The terrace was originally part of ramparts built to protect the city. Between 1739 and 1748 count Henrich von Brühl, a powerful minister under King Augustus the Strong, transformed the ramparts into a terraced garden for his palace. Goethe gave it the name 'Balcony of Europe'.  The staircase is flanked by four bronze sculptures, each symbolizing one season.
