Transfer Printed Pot ~ Crock
YOUNG’S MORECAMBE POTTED SHRIMPS
c. 1900
This is a fabulous little transferware pot or crock, salvaged from an old tip in England. The crock is made of stoneware, decorated with black transfer printing. It measures 3 1/2" in diameter and stands 1 1/2" tall. It was made in Staffordshire or one of the other pottery districts in Great Britain / UK , around 1890-1910.
The crock once contained Young’s Morecambe Potted Shrimps, quite the delicacy in tough economic times. The succulent brown shrimp was only to be found on a few parts of the British coastline. One of the most productive areas for the shrimp was Morecambe Bay, where the shrimps are renowned all over the world for their delicate taste and brown color. The potting of shrimps was popularized by the seafood factory Young's in the village of Flookburgh. Fishermen's wives would sell the shrimps locally door to door out of baskets. Served with plenty of buttered Hovis, a dash of vinegar, lemon and a shake of the pepper pot, they were superb.
This little crock is in very good condition. There is a chip in the making glazed over on the rim. A fun little piece to display in a modern kitchen or to round out your collection of advertising stonewares or transferwares.
