Exquisite Early Pearlware Coffee Pot
MILKMAID with COW & SHEEP
Davenport Longport Staffordshire England c 1840
This bachelor size transferware coffee pot or tall teapot stands 7-1/2 inches high. Originally part of a complete tea set and coffee service, made of creamy earthenware transfer printed in sepia brown with the blue ponding of pearlware glaze. The perfectly formed urn shaped has an inset lid with steam hole in the button finial. The rims and handle are decorated with a floral motif.
The central image features a milkmaid milking her cow, a bucket and stool in hand, with recumbent sheep relaxing on the hillside. The image repeats on both sides of the base.
The coffee pot was made by Davenport, one of the Staffordshire potteries located in Longport England in early to mid 19th century. The piece is marked with a DAVENPORT backstamp.
The coffee pot is in great condition, with a bit of roughening on the undertip of the spout but no chips, cracks, or repairs. The transfers are clear and crisp with intricate detail and whimsical styling. It will make a gorgeous addition to any collection of cows on early brown transferware.
