EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE MUG
NAMED MUG ~ MARIA
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1830
This is a little child's transferware mug, circa 1830. This diminutive piece stands 2 1/8 inches tall x 2 3/8 inches wide with an applied acanthus type loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze. The small mug has a wonderful engine turned base.
The mug is transfer printed in bright red with a spectacular scrolling with whisps of ferns and flowers surrounding the name. The name " MARIA " in a lovely type is placed at the front of the mug. The mug is rare as the name Maria was very uncommon and near impossible to find on early children's ware.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children and as christening presents.
The condition of this exceptional mug is EXCELLENT, clean and bright with no wear.
