Early Pearlware Child's Mug ~ MARTHA 1830

SOLD OUT

Code: 10232

EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE MUG

NAMED MUG ~ MARTHA

Staffordshire England  ~  c. 1830

This is whimsical little child's transferware mug, circa 1830. This diminutive piece stands 2 3/4 " tall x 2 3/4 " wide with an applied acanthus type loop handle.  The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.  The small mug has a wonderful engine turned base.

The mug is transfer printed in black with a spectacular scrolling with whisps of fern or seaweed and flowers surrounding the name.  The name " MARTHA " in a lovely type is placed at the front of the mug.  The mug is rare as the name Martha was very uncommon and near impossible to find on early children's ware.

The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period.

The condition of this exceptional mug is EXCELLENT,  clean and bright with no wear.  Normal stilt marks.
