Rare Pearlware Staffordshire Platter
ZOOLOGICAL SKETCHES ~ RHINOCEROS
Job Meigh & Son Staffordshire England c.1820
This is spectacular large Staffordshire transferware platter, c. 1820. It measures 19 1/4” long and 15 1/8” across. It was impeccably potted and finely transfer printed in a rich and intense bittersweet black, with a pearlware glaze, gadrooned edge and scalloped rim.
The central well depicts a Rhinoceros from Africa. There is another rhino in the background of gorgeous high desert mountain scenery. The platter has a bold border with 5 birds along with lavish flowers, seashells and a cornucopia. An absolutely stunning composition.
The platter was made by Job Meigh and Sons, c. 1820, and is part of the elusive the Zoological Sketches series. The series features different wild animals and other exotic creatures on each form.
The platter is in good condition with a stable interior hairline crack showing to the lower part of the piece, more noticeable from the rear. The platter displays perfectly. This highly sought after platter will make a gorgeous centerpiece on any table or wall display of black transferware!
