10 ~ Rare Pearlware Staffordshire Deep Soup Plates
ZOOLOGICAL SKETCHES ~ GAZELLE
Job Meigh & Son Staffordshire England c.1820
These are spectacular large black Staffordshire transferware deep soup plates, c. 1820. They measure 10 1/4" across. They are impeccably potted and finely transfer printed in a rich and intense bittersweet black, with a pearlware glaze, gadrooned edge and scalloped rim.
The central well depicts a Gazelle from Africa. There is a pair of Gazelles in the background of gorgeous high desert oasis mountain scenery. The plate has a bold border with 5 birds along with lavish flowers and a butterfly feeding on a Passion Flower. Hidden are seashells. An absolutely stunning composition.
The plates were made by Job Meigh and Sons, c. 1820, and is part of the elusive the Zoological Sketches series. The series features different wild animals and other exotic creatures on each form.
Never Used and very clean. The plates are in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. The plates displays perfectly or ready for use. I have more in this pattern available.
