Sixteen Rare Pearlware Staffordshire Plates
ZOOLOGICAL SKETCHES ~ ZEBRA
Job Meigh & Son Staffordshire England c.1820
These are spectacular large dinner black Staffordshire transferware plates, c. 1820. Each measures 10 1/4" across. They are impeccably potted and finely transfer printed in a rich and intense bittersweet black, with a pearlware glaze, gadrooned edge and scalloped rim.
The central well depicts a Zebra from Africa. There is another Zebra running with an Ostrich in the background of gorgeous high desert mountain scenery. The plate has a bold border with 5 birds along with lavish flowers and a butterfly feeding on a Passion Flower. Hidden are seashells. An absolutely stunning composition.
The plate was made by Job Meigh and Sons, c. 1820, and is part of the elusive the Zoological Sketches series. The series features different wild animals and other exotic creatures on each form.
The plates are in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. The plates displays perfectly and are ready for use. I have more in this pattern available.
