AESTHETIC BROWN POLYCHROME TRANSFERWARE PLATE

INDUS PATTERN

Ridgways Potteries
Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire England
c. 1885

This very desirable and sought after Victorian aesthetic 9 1/4 " plate is transfer printed in delicious dark chocolate brown with exciting red and gold lustre hand coloring under the glaze.  The best looking Indus we have seen.

The pattern features some of the most outrageous looking birds the potteries artist could imagine.  A rim of wildly tropical flowers with hummingbirds.  The well of the plate has aquatic orchid type flowers beneath two unusual and exotic birds and exotic fruit laden trees.

The pieces are marked on the underside with an impressed registration mark, the pattern name and trademark that identifies the maker as Ridgways, a pottery maker working in Stoke upon Trent in the Staffordshire region of England during the 19th century.

The plate is in great condition, clean shiny and bright.  No chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no repairs. It is absolutely gorgeous - elegant and well potted, with richly detailed transfers reflecting the Victorian love of the exotic.
