VERY LARGE SUPERB STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFERWARE PLATTER

AESOP'S FABLES

THE HORSE AND THE LOADED ASS

Copeland and Garrett ~ New Blanche

Staffordshire, England  1833 - 1847

This outstanding large and rare platter measures 20 1/2 inches long x 15 3/4 inches wide.  It is crisply transfer printed in a the best green.

The platter has a wonderful irregularly scalloped edge and a border pattern of trios of large flowers seperated by hydrangea blossoms. The corners are filled with Fox heads and wild roses.

The central image illustrates the fable by Aesop of The Horse and the Loaded Ass:

AN IDLE HORSE, and an Ass laboring under a heavy burden, were traveling the road together. The Ass, ready to faint under his heavy load, entreated the Horse to assist him, and lighten his burden, by taking some of it upon his back. The Horse was ill-natured and refused to do it; upon which the poor Ass tumbled down in the midst of the highway, and expired. The countryman then took the whole burden, and laid it upon the Horse, together with the skin of the dead Ass.

Moral:

Laziness often prepares a burden for its own back.

The platter displays beautifully and is in great condition and ready for use.  A lovely piece for the advanced collector and the centerpiece of any display.
