St Augustine Staffordshire Rabbitware Frogs Cows Plate c1900
Rabbits and Frogs and Cows
St. Augustine Ware ~ England ~ c.1900
This is a colorful hand painted transferware plate, c. 1900, from the genre of rabbit ware plates that have become very popular.
Measuring 9 7/8“ in diameter, the plate is decorated with rich chocolate brown transfer print which was then hand painted in a brilliant green, yellow, brick red and brown, depicting four rabbits, one doming out of the rabbit hole or warren. Two frogs soak up the sun in mid-stream and cows graze nearby in the English countryside.
The plate recites the amusing rhyme, " SEASON ME WELL WITH PEPPER AND SALT, AND JUST A PINCH OF MUSTARD YELLOW. AN' DON'T FORGET THE ALE OF MALT, FOR THAT'S THE JUICE THAT MAKES ME MELLOW "
The plate was probably made in the Staffordshire district of England. Very little is known about the actual origin of these wonderfully whimsical rabbit plates.
The plate is in great condition.
