RARE EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE MUG
SIGN LANGUAGE ~ ALPHABET ~ ABC
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1830
This child's transferware mug, circa 1830, is extremely rare. It stands 2 1/2 " tall and 2 1/2 " wide excluding the applied loop handle with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer decorated in black, with 24 blocks, like a checkboard, containing letters of the alphabet and corresponding sign from finger-spelling or sign language for the deaf. The upper right-hand corner depicts an entire hand, representing the five vowels. The mug is richly detailed -- a very desirable ABC mug!
The condition of this exceptional mug is great.
