Early Slip Decorated Mocha Ware Child's Transferware Mug
ZEBRA & HORNED GOAT RAM
Staffordshire England c. 1840
This is a very early, primitive child's transferware jug with slip decorated blue mocha background. It was made around 1840. The little mug stands 2-3/4" tall with a cinched waist, turned base and wide handle attached with primitive terminals. It is made of earthenware. Black transfer printing depicts wild animals -- a Zebra on one side and a Ram or Goat on the reverse. The mug is a great example of early folk art pottery.
The mug was probably made in the Staffordshire region of England, but according to some sources, it may have been made in one of several Northern factories near Sunderland, or Swansea Wales.
The naive little mug is in great condition.
This fantastic transferware mug with mocha slip embellishment will make a gorgeous addition to any serious collection of early children's wares and would be a fabulous gift for collectors in African or wild animals .
