Early Slip Decorated Mocha Ware Child's Transferware Mug

TIGER & WILDEBEEST

Staffordshire England c. 1840

This is a very early, primitive child's transferware jug with slip decorated mochaware background. It was made around 1840. The little mug stands 2-3/4" tall with a cinched waist, turned base and wide handle attached with primitive terminals. It is made of earthenware. Black transfer printing depicts wild animals -- a tiger on one side and a wildebeest or wild boat on the reverse. The mug is a great example of early folk art pottery.

The mug was probably made in the Staffordshire region of England, but according to some sources, it may have been made in one of several Northern factories near Sunderland, or Swansea Wales.

Plates and mugs with images like this were made in the early to mid-19th century to be given as gifts for a special occasion or rewards of merit and were also used to aid in the education of young children.

The naive little mug is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. The transfers are well applied, adding to the charm of this early piece. Very whimsical styling and winsome imagery.
