Color Sample Plate Tile Hand Painted Salesman Sample England

SOLD

Code: 10962

This earthenware color trial plaque or tile is a very unusual collectors item, for art studio/interior design/shop prop. The round tile plaque measures 6 inches in diameter. An artist used this tile to test and demonstrate the use of colors and range when applied to the earthenware material, showing an array of 19 colors shades and hues of kiln fired enamel paints representing the palette for a particular pottery and porcelain design project. The center of the plate is decorated with a custom transfer print of Phoenix Rising from the Ashes, possibly the “signature” of the artist or the theme of the project. The paint samples were dabbed on, each color assigned a name and number, and then the plate was fired at over 800 degrees. The back side of the tile carries the backstamp of H&R Johnson Tiles Ltd Staffordshire England, the maker of the blank roundel plaque.

Test/Color Sample Plates like these were used as a reference for artists and painters to ensure consistency in colors, for practice work or to show colors to customers. They might also have been displayed in a pottery shop, and carried by paint salesman. These were not available to buy. Functional for the artist and a fine work of art for the collector.

The plaque is in great condition, unused except for display for a short project purpose, with no chips cracks or repairs. Typical irregularities of an artist’s hand decorated piece. The plate is unique, one of a kind perfect for the artist potter or anyone with an artistic flair. The colorful ware displays beautifully, would light up any work space wall. The diminutive size renders a pocket size example, suitable for carrying in an artist’s satchel. Sold as is, as shown.
