Very Rare Black Transferware TREACLE POT JAR ~ Horses 1860
BLACK TRANSFERWARE SCREW TOP TREACLE POT
HORSES
Staffordshire England c 1860
This very rare transferware treacle pot or covered honey jar measured 5 1/4 " tall x 4 1/4 " wide excluding the applied handle. The piece is coated in a pearlware glaze. Transfer printed in black with different horse heads to each side and one to the screw top.
Treacle pots were designed to hold sweeteners derived from honey or molasses. The screw on top keeps ants and other insects out of the container. The lid and base are marked by the potter to assure that the pieces were made for one another.
The pieces are in good condition with a small hairline to the bottom of the handle. Screws and unscrews and seals perfectly.
