EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE MUG
YOUNG LOVERS
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1840
This is whimsical little child's transferware mug, circa 1840. This diminutive piece stands 2 1/2 " tall x 2 1/2 " wide with an applied loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in black with a scene of a young couple strolling in the garden.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period.
The condition of this exceptional mug is great. Nicely potted and the transfers were applied with a good deal of attention to detail. It is amazing that this little piece was made for a child so long ago!
Children's early mugs of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The images are delightful, a throwback to a much simpler time. The cup will make a great addition to your collection of children's dishes.
